For this date, the thoughtful but adventurous soprano saxophonist
Steve Lacy meets up with the fiery baritonist
Charles Tyler in a quartet also including bassist
J.J. Avenel and drummer
Oliver Johnson. Together, they perform three of
Lacy's tricky but logical scalar originals,
Tyler's "The Adventures Of," and
Thelonious Monk's "Friday the 13th." In addition,
Tyler (switching to alto) has a fine trio feature with
Avenel and
Johnson on "Ode to Lady Day." The inside/outside music rewards repeated listenings, and the
Lacy/
Tyler match-up, helped by their contrasting but complementary styles, works quite well. ~ Scott Yanow
