To give you an idea of the style of music that
Tiny Animals specialize in, quite a few of their tunes have been heard on such MTV reality shows as Real World, Teen Mom, College Life, 16 and Pregnant, and Jersey Shore. Depending on who you ask, this could either be a good thing or a bad thing, but regardless,
Tiny Animals' music usually consists of pop tunes with fuzzy guitars, as evidenced throughout their 2011 effort,
Our Own Time. Their second full-length release overall proves that their debut, 2009's
Sweet Sweetness, was no fluke, as they still possess a knack for coming up with tunes that have at least one hard to forget melody bit and/or a hummable chorus. A case in point is the album's leadoff single, "Wait for Me," which sums up
Tiny Animals in a tidy 3:15 new wave-ish pop song, as well as the album-opening "Fight or Flight" (which bears a resemblance to a not-so-hyper
blink-182), "You Let the Whole World Down," and "We Can Read the Stars," among others. With the arrival of
Our Own Time,
Tiny Animals certainly avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, with an album proving that not all pop-based music of the early 21st century has to sound like American Idol-style pabulum. ~ Greg Prato
