Fiddler
Byron Berline is in great form on this all-instrumental studio session released by Flying Fish in 1980. He has several of his Sundance bandmates on hand, including acoustic guitarist
Dan Crary, banjo player
John Hickman, guitarist
Vince Gill (long before his country career skyrocketed him to fame), dobro guitarist
Skip Conover, and drummer
Mark Cohen. Also present are guitarists
James Burton and
Albert Lee, pianist
John Hobbs, bassist Lee Sklar, as well as pedal steel guitarist
JayDee Mannes.
Berline is clearly having fun in the studio. With one exception, the focus is on originals by the leader. It's clear that everyone is enjoying himself, as no one player holds the spotlight for long and the solos are passed back and forth between the musicians. All in all, this is a delightful session that easily stands up to repeat hearings. ~ Ken Dryden
