Acht Jahre war Peter Gabriel von der Bildfläche verschwunden. Untätig war der Brite während dieser Zeit natürlich nie, er trieb den Ausbau seiner Real World Studios voran, tourte mit seinem letzten Album im Gepäck durch die Welt, veröffentlichte Multimedia-CDs und organisierte Benefizveranstaltungen. Irgendwann Ende 1997 begann Peter Gabriel, ein Konzept für die Milleniums-Show im Londoner Millenium Dome zu erarbeiten. 1998 wurden Ideen gesammelt, 1999 begann er, die Musik zu komponieren. Während das Stück am 1. Januar Premiere hatte, dauerte es noch ein halbes Jahr, bis die Musik den Weg auf die CD gefunden hatte. Wie schon auf dem Vorgänger "US" arbeitet Gabriel auch hier mit verschiedenen Musikern aus anderen Kontinenten zusammen und so bewegt sich die Musik auf "OVO" in Richtung Worldmusic. Allerdings spürt man die Anwesenheit Peter Gabriels noch immer deutlich, tragen die Stücke doch klar seine Handschrift und spätestens beim dritten Stück "The Time Of Turning" fühlt man sich doch ein wenig an "Don't give up" erinnert. Wobei sich Gabriel nicht selbst wiederholt, "OVO" klingt frisch und sehr modern, ohne mit Trends zu kokettieren. Von seiner Experimentierfreudigkeit hat Peter Gabriel nach wie vor nichts verloren. Anfangs vermißt der Hörer zwar eingängige Hits. Dafür wächst das Album mit jedem Durchgang ein bißchen und nach einiger Zeit bekommt man den Eindruck, ein sehr gutes und in sich stimmiges Werk in den Händen bzw. Ohren zu haben. Natürlich enthält auch "OVO" einen Multimedia-Track. Dieser ist relativ schlicht gehalten, überzeugt aber durch seine Liebe zum Detail. Teil 1 - welcher anfangs etwas verwirrend ist - zeigt die Arbeiten am Bühnenaufbau der Milleniums-Show, Teil 2 besteht aus einem Comicstrip, welcher die Geschichte von "OVO" erzählt. Die Musik scheint genau darauf zugeschnitten zu sein.
