The music of the well-loved but critically underappreciated Southern rock band
the Black Crowes provides perfect material for bluegrass covers. This album begins with a version of the
Robinson brothers' "Jealous Again," which comes off like an old-time, rip-roaring barnburner. "Thorn in My Pride" seems like a movie-worthy reprise of the original and "Twice as Hard" and "Wiser Time" are melancholy, thoughtful, and enchanting versions of great songs. What really makes this album stand out from other tributes and other records in the
Pickin' On series is that it skillfully applies the best sounds of bluegrass and country to
the Black Crowes, changing the genre but all the while maintaining the spirit of the original. ~ Charles Spano
