Originally released on
Eubie Blake's own label, this set of solo performances features the 88-year old pianist in fine form. Recently rediscovered after decades in obscurity,
Eubie was enjoying a renaissance and was on his way to becoming more famous than he had ever been. He performs a dozen piano solos on this 1971 program including seven of his originals (a couple of which had been recently composed). In addition, his 1921 recording of "Charleston Rag" (which
Blake composed in 1899) is reissued side-by-side with his rendition of a half-century later. Other highlights include "You're Lucky To Me," "You Do Something To Me," Luckey Roberts' "Pork And Beans" and "Classical Rag." This Stash Lp, one of
Eubie Blake's best all-round recordings, is recommended and deserves to be reissued on CD.
