Pianist Heath Allen leads his sextet through 14 of his deliciously zany creations. With titles like "Goblins Gone Goofy," "Meatballs for the Maestro," and "The Bela Lugosi Memorial Freilach," you might wonder what to expect. Actually, the music is a bit tame, with a clear nod to show tunes and circus melodies. While the level of improvising is little more than adequate, the three horns plus rhythm have a good time, with rapid changes the norm. Allen sports a nice sense of humor, and even throws in a bit of klezmer along the way. Stan Slotter's fiery trumpet, Bob Butryn's wild saxophone, and Jim Parker's blustery trombone each have a few moments to shine, while the leader's piano holds down the fort. Danceable and accessible, this recording breaks no new ground, but instead bursts with joy.
