Following a four-year gap since the 2010 EP Bare Blips,
Redinho makes his return with this debut self-titled full-length album. The British producer's time away doesn't seem wasted, as this release finds him in good form. The record is a blend of pop, funk, and synth-heavy electronics that follows on nicely from his previous efforts. The album's opener, "Stinger," is as lush and melodic as a
Jean-Luc Ponty track, with organic drum fills, cymbal crashes, and
Redinho's signature distorted vocoder FX vocals, which are something of a regular occurrence on this record. There is a distinct influence throughout the record that is very fitting with the rest of the Glasgow electronic music scene, especially the Numbers label's output. The
Hudson Mohawke and
Rustie-esque songs "Searching" and "Bubbles" are good examples of this, stylistically similar yet with his own signature sound drenched with vocodered vocals. The tracks featuring vocalists are the most pop-tinged, and "Going Nowhere" is a pop classic straight out of the '80s and early '90s.
Redinho finds good variety, but possibly the finer moments on the record are those without the guest vocalists. As a full-length debut, it's a good effort with some really interesting compositions. The production work is well polished and there is enough about the record that makes you want to keep an eye on future
Redinho releases. With a few more collaborations and a few more standout tracks, this guy could be going places. ~ James Pearce
