Bob Schulz is a fine trad cornetist who takes an occasional vocal and is sometimes reminiscent in his singing of Clancy Hayes. It seemed logical to have him record a full-length tribute to banjoist/vocalist Hayes and, although there is a bit too much singing on this set (
Schulz takes vocals on 16 of the 18 numbers), the high-quality repertoire and the excellent musicianship make this set recommended to classic jazz fans. In addition to
Schulz's cornet, there are solos from clarinetist
Kim Cusack, trombonist Tom Bartlett, Tom Starr (who plays second trombone on four numbers), and pianist James Dapogny. Highlights include "Auntie Skinner's Chicken Dinner," "My Honey's Loving Arms," "Fidgety Feet," and the joyous "Peoria." ~ Scott Yanow
