Captain Sensible has repeatedly demonstrated that he's not interested in confining himself to easy categories in his solo work. For many performers, this ambition would be considered a virtue. But when your songs and talent aren't particularly distinguished, the result sounds more irritatingly confusing than impressive. The
Captain plays '80s British dance rock, neo-psychedelia, and White-boy soul, sometimes in the same song; he links many of his tracks with sound bites of an experimental nature. If he just settled down into neo-psychedelia (his strongest suit), this would sound better; the frequent chilly synthesizers are especially bothersome. There are some nice bits of melody here and there, but you get the uneasy feeling that eclecticism is being used as a cover for the lack of killer material or a compelling lyrical thread. ~ Richie Unterberger
