An early-'80s studio outfit assembled by producer Ray Rock and featuring the vocals of
Crown Heights Affair member Ray "Johnny" Reid, Rocket's self-titled, seven-song set is most notable for the serene, summery strains of "Here Comes My Love," a mid-tempo club jaunt replete with a catchy, softly sung melody and a sublimely funky, zesty rhythm section (note that the remixed 12" version included here outshines the original version -- also included). Otherwise, the material is par for the course as '80s dance music goes, with routine numbers like "Come Together" and "Groove Thing" offering feel-good arrangements, but nothing distinguishable or long-lasting in melody or vocals. The only number that comes close to matching the caliber of "Here Comes My Love" is the festive party number "I Wanna Know," featuring a stylish, sexy co-lead performance by disco diva
Carol Douglas. Unidisc's CD reissue contains several versions of "Here Comes My Love." ~ Justin M. Kantor
