The great flutist
James Newton pays tribute to
Charles Mingus and (more indirectly)
Eric Dolphy on his "Forever Charles" and a rare remake of
Mingus' "Meditations On Integration."
Newton interacts with both
Steve Turre and Robin Eubanks on trombones, along with pianist
Geri Allen, bassist Rick Rozie and drummer
Pheeroan akLaff, bringing back the spirit of
Mingus. In addition, there is a rendition of
Ornette Coleman's "Peace" played with cellist Abdul Wadud, Rozie and
akLaff, and a lengthy original ("The Evening Leans Toward You") that covers a wide range of moods. A stimulating set. ~ Scott Yanow
