This Perfect Day's debut album,
Rubber Soul, may not share much with
the Beatles' masterpiece of the same name, but it is nevertheless an appealing pop collection. The Swedish group builds from the melodic innocence of early
Beatles and the jangling alt-pop of the '80s, tempering it all with a slight suggestion of new wave and punk-pop. Lyrically, the group's a little lightweight, but they have a stronger sense of songcraft than many of their Swede-pop peers, and that's the reason why
Rubber Soul is such a charming, winning debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
