As a member of R&B supergroup
Shalamar from 1977 to 1984,
Jeffrey Daniel never really got the spotlight as a leader, at least when it came to single releases -- those spots were reserved for
Jody Watley and
Howard Hewett. But he was known for his savvy choreography (for the group, and later for many other R&B artists) and natural dance ability; hence this set's title. Unfortunately, this generally lackluster effort suggests he should've stuck to that. Throwaway new jack swing creations like "She's the Girl" suffer from barren hooks and vacuous arrangements, while the house-esque title track sounds like background music for a low-budget clothing commercial. The most reasonable offering here is
Daniel's restrained cover of
the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," which is included as a bonus track on the CD version of the album.
Daniel has an acceptable voice, but he sounds like he'd been out of practice for a few years at the recording of
Skinny Boy, particularly on the a cappella "I Believe," which is plagued with intonation problems.
