A relatively standard set of contemporary workings on the Taiko ensemble. Since it was actually recorded at the New York Buddhist Church, one can't fault the folks at Lyrichord for not finding a more traditional ensemble; for that matter, they really are quite good. The main problem with such an album as this is probably the fact that Westerners are pampered by other bigger Taiko ensembles, most notably
Kodo (though
Soh Daiko may predate
Kodo). The music is relatively rousing, though not up to the tempo standards set by groups like
Kodo. Decently good, given that it's a primarily American release, but even Lyrichord, the old standard bearer of world music, can give out a release that's only "decent" once in a while. ~ Adam Greenberg
