Songs At Room Temperature par D.benway - DeepRiffs

Daniel Johnston designed the sleeve, which is the clue to the sort of warped music on the aptly titled Songs at Room Temperature. It's mostly hard acoustic folk-rock with occasional solo piano or organ, and occasional freak-out psych guitar and overloaded in-the-red distorto vocal -- see "Rock Religion/Opossum Town." The simple, oddball backing tracks are fine enough, but Massachusetts' Benway's singing is the spanner in these works, as he's in and out of tune on seemingly every note, it's as if it were never a consideration. And maybe it isn't. Like Johnston, there's an element of mental malady here (even without the acoustic waltz "Thank God for the Mentally Ill"), a mind left to wander rather than conform to any orderly society. If you want a nice slick singer/songwriter, you've come to the wrong place! There's nothing predictable about Benway at all. You never know what you're going to get, and that part of this is what intrigues even as you fear for his sanity.
