For
Soul Spin, producer Frank Wilson stirred nearly everything into the pot, directing
the Four Tops to darker, topical material like the paternity case "Barbara's Boy" and "Lost in a Pool of Red," but also including two
Burt Bacharach covers and Motown's take on
the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'." Elsewhere, the
Beatles cover "Got to Get You Into My Life" has a dated chart but a tearing
Levi Stubbs lead to save it, and "Light My Fire" is a startling success, with a slow-burn feel and great group vocals on the chorus. These are only curiosities, though, perfect for hardcore Motown fans listeners interested in digging deeper. ~ John Bush
