The post-disco/pre-house clearing-house compilation set that destroys all competitors, Unidisc's
Star Funk goes so deep that even fanatics of the era in question will only find a cut or two worth keeping on each volume. The 40th volume does contain
Sound Experience's "You've Broken My Heart," Sapphire's "Make Love to the Music," and a rough-sounding live version of
Taka Boom's "I Love the Nightlife," and a few songs are curiosities in some respect, but there's far too much third-rate fluff to make this anything more than a middling affair. Hats off to Unidisc for putting forth the effort in digging up all of these forgotten (or never known to begin with) singles, but they've taken obscurantism too far. ~ Andy Kellman
