A compilation only ten tracks in length seems woefully inadequate for someone as prolific as
Gladys Knight, but this
Super Hits compilation focuses on a specific period. This disc covers
Knight's years with Columbia, 1980-1985. No one would refer to this era as
Knight's best, yet several of these songs -- including all the tracks off 1980's
About Love, an excellent album written and produced by
Ashford & Simpson, as well as 1983's "Save the Overtime (For Me)" -- are among the best R&B released during the early '80s.
Knight was one of the few veteran R&B artists to make a smooth transition into the decade. ~ Andy Kellman
