Composer and percussionist Viveick Rajagopalan dipped into Indian classical, rap, drum ‘n’ bass and jazz on his 2018 project, Ta Dhom Project. Now available in Spatial Audio with three new tracks, the album exemplifies his fluid sense of polyrhythms and a willingness to experiment. A multilingual flavour is strong throughout, thanks to the presence of several guest rappers. Mridangam, flute and kanjira anchor the pieces in Carnatic music—there’s liberal use of konnakol on “Just Bols”, where MC Mawali, MC Mayavi and MC TODFOD vocalise syllables in a style reminiscent of tabla bol. Synth sounds sparkle on “Bol Rap” and “Phrase 11”, while a vivid bassline flows through “K Rap” as well as MC Khoj’s Marathi and MC DEHAATI’s Bhojpuri raps. Tamil rapper MC Artslord drops socially conscious lyrics on “Get Up and Dance”. On “Dhvani”, MC Mawali, MC TODFOD and MC Mayavi spit bars in both counterpoint and unison. The result? A breathtaking collaboration, with impressive vocal performances across the board.
