Clarinetist
Tim Laughlin and violinist Tom Morley co-lead
Talkin' Swing, a fine swing date that features an excellent sextet.
Laughlin contributed two songs and the repertoire ranges from a
Bob Wills Western swing medley to such standards as "Lullaby of Birdland," "I Found a New Baby," and "Tiger Rag." This session, recorded a few months before the band went on a European tour, gave Morley (who is from Alabama) an opportunity to play with some of the top New Orleans players.
Laughlin's clarinet recalls
Pete Fountain in spots, stride pianist John Royen is showcased on "Old Man River," and Morley blends in well with the clarinet and the ensemble. Everyone swings well and both the musicianship and the improvisations are impressive. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
