The Age of Sophya leaves the listener with a feeling of dark, emotional loneliness. Sonically comparable to early-'80s German industrial music, the album features brooding vocals over simple rhythms that often sound like they were produced by a Casio keyboard. The other instrumental work on
The Age of Sophya is a marginal improvement but lacks variation. Fortunately, something positive can be said for
Sophya's voice, which has unique qualities and is emotionally attuned to the lyrics. The album's male vocals are a real downer, however; they are predictably gloomy and overly dramatic as well.
