The first 15 tracks of this CD were released in 1961 as The Bestiary of Flanders and Swann, the duo's second album for Parlophone. These humorous animal songs had been performed before by others, most notably by Ian Wallace, but these are the versions most will recall. For the most part whimsical and innocent, such songs as "The Warthog" and "The Rhinoceros" are seemingly intended for children. "The Whale" is especially delightful for its intricate rhymes. "The Wompom" -- half animal, half plant -- is the most absurd creature in this zoo and with it, Flanders and Swann join Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll in fanciful invention. But the cautionary "Dead Ducks" and the pathetic tale of "The Armadillo" are plainly addressed to adults and make telling points about human frailty and self-deception. "The Ostrich" is Flanders' most overt critique of nuclear proliferation. Bonus tracks are grouped under the heading "Extiary," and include live performances of the mildly risqué "p**p*B****B**D******," the slyly Francophobic "Paris," and the hilarious anti-diet anthem "Food for Thought." Also included are the anti-war songs "20 Tons of TNT" and "The War of 14-18." EMI released this CD in 1991 as the third disc in The Complete Flanders and Swann.
