Hard rock/metal can be a limiting label as far as genre. There are some bands who find the way to rise above such limitations. With this debut release as an indication,
the Deadlights are certainly one such group. They seem to take their cue from various schools of heavy metal and on occasion reach beyond the metal zone entirely. Indeed, the influences on the CD range from
Nine Inch Nails/
Marilyn Manson to
Metallica,
Powerman 5000,
Black Sabbath,
Kiss,
Jane's Addiction,
Enuff Z'Nuff, and even
Hawkwind. The closing piece, atypical of the rest of the album, even alludes to
Led Zeppelin and
the Beatles at times. Although the lineup on the album is Duke, Jerry Montano, Billy Roan, and Jim Falcone, the group has had some lineup problems since the release and are reported to have broken up. This CD really showed promise for
the Deadlights becoming a killer hard rock/metal outfit. ~ Gary Hill
