Upon the 2007 re-release of Disrupt's 1994 cult classic,
Unrest, Relapse Records culled
The Rest, a double-disc set of demos and tracks only previously available on split singles. This mammothly dense set of tunes (a total of 78 tracks are squeezed onto the two discs) is exactly what you'd expect from the group that is often credited as one of the forefathers of the now widely accepted hardcore/extreme metal style. Raging vocals doing nonstop battle with grindcore riffing and drumming are the key ingredients here from beginning to end, so you can take your pick of this smorgasbord of angst -- "Trapped," "An End to White Rule," "Fuck Fashion," etc. The 7" material fares better than the demos (the group was still finding its stylistic footing on the latter, and as with most demos by up-and-comers, the sonics aren't exactly crystal clear). But for longtime Disrupt fans, this vault-clearing, no-stone-left-unturned collection will be a most welcomed replacement for all their worn-out cassettes and scratchy vinyl. ~ Greg Prato
