Pianist-composer
David Chesky, who founded the
Chesky label, took time off from his producing and business activities to record this intriguing set in 1992. Chesky composed two tangos, five dances and three chornihos for a program of Argentinean and Brazilian-flavored music that was clearly touched by his knowledge of classical music. With guitarist
Romero Lubambo offering harmonies, support and a second lead voice,
Chesky is heard in excellent form, showing what a fine pianist and composer he is along with displaying his ability to caress fresh melodies. Fans of tangos and sambas will find much to enjoy on this inventive and often-surprising set. ~ Scott Yanow
