The musicians on this CD --
Lennart Aberg on tenor and soprano, trumpeter
Anders Bergcrantz, bassist Christian Spering, and drummer Fredrik Noren (with two guest appearances by guitarist Goran Klinghagen and Rose-Marie Aberg adding her voice to "The Zone") -- are unknown in the United States but they are certainly world-class players. Their music ranges from hard bop to nearly free, often falling halfway in between. The repertoire is particularly intriguing, with "Moon River" co-existing with
Ornette Coleman's "The Sphinx" and three Aberg originals alternating with "Rockin' in Rhythm,"
Thelonious Monk's "Pannonica," and "Django." The two horn players in particular are strong improvisers and their reactions to each other are quick and intuitive. An intriguing and highly enjoyable release of surprising music, well worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow
