Paul Bacon is an OK vocalist who has a limited range but swings well. His likable vocals are heard on 18 songs introduced by
Fred Astaire, including four written by the famous dancer/singer/actor, of which "I'm Building up to an Awful Let Down" was the closest one to being a hit. Although
Bacon is fine, the main reason to acquire this CD is for the exciting playing by his backup group.
Peter Ecklund and
Jon-Erik Kellso alternate on trumpets and the group also includes
Scott Robinson on clarinet, alto clarinet, tenor, and soprano; guitarist
James Chirillo; Vince Giordano doubling on bass and bass sax; drummer Bill Reynolds; and the leader of the Manhattan Swingtet, pianist
Keith Ingham. The ensemble has plenty of solos and the arrangements by
Ingham of such tunes as "A Fine Romance," "Easter Parade," "The Way You Look Tonight," "I'd Rather Lead a Band," and "Putting on the Ritz" are inventive and swinging. This appealing CD is easily recommended to mainstream swing fans. ~ Scott Yanow
