Subtle and surprisingly affectionate,
Tiger Flies was a responsible but somewhat unglamorous follow-up that gently lifted from the work of
Badly Drawn Boy,
Grandaddy, and
Tindersticks. As on "Talk About Troubles,"
Candidate proved they could be as obscure as
the Beta Band but with bigger heart, constructing a song of quiet lyrics, softly sweeping guitars, and a touch of breakbeat, and the band's use of Alex Donohoe's (Delila) backing vocals in "Honey" suggested a slight step forward from Taking on the Enemy's Sound's sometimes too spare constructions. ~ Dean Carlson
