While this date is billed to
Chet Baker on the cover, he is technically little more than a sideman in a band fronted by vocalist
Martha Burks with Kirby Stuart on bass, drummer
Paul Guerrero Jr., and pianist
Floyd Darling.
Baker gets his opportunities to play, but by this juncture he was simply going through the motions and for the most part squanders them. His long intro solo to "My Foolish Heart" is easily the most soulful thing here, capturing his phrasing in something that approaches his former lyric glory, though his tone is shot. On the final track, "Chet Swings," he can barely keep up with the rhythm section and is out of tune. This is for the most hardcore
Baker collectors only. The sound quality is far from optimum, and the performance is shoddy at best.
