Kenny Werner's compositions on his CD are full of surprising turns and contrasting moods. Although none of his 12 complex originals on the date are destined to become standards, these complicated pieces serve as a strong challenge to the improvising talents of
Werner's impressive group (which also includes trumpeter
Randy Brecker,
Joe Lovano on tenor and soprano, bassist
Eddie Gomez, drummer
John Riley and percussionist Edson Cafe Adasilva). The
Keith Jarretish "Jacob" and "Hi Sweetie" are brief piano features while there are many strong solos on the other selections from
Brecker and
Lovano. Much of the music is rather somber and busy with plenty of written ensembles and performances that may take a few listens to fully digest and appreciate. ~ Scott Yanow
