This EP gives a good taste of what
Buzzov-en's brand of nihilistic Southern punk/metal is all about. Snarling vocals, sludgy riffs, and bitter lyrics predominate, forming an overall sound that could roughly be described as
Black Sabbath meets
Black Flag. Actually, a closer comparison would be fellow Southerners (and past touring mates) Eyehategod, another band known for their down-tuned guitars, unsettling spoken word samples, and general drugged-out depravity.
Buzzov-en, though, tends to play faster than Eyehategod, and their sound is not quite so thick or swampy. The first three songs on
Unwilling to Explain are all catchy and well written, with "Hollow," which shifts between an off-kilter shuffle and a pummeling low-end riff, standing out as the highlight. "Aching Improv #13," the closer, is not really a song but instead a collage of samples and other noises layered atop a slow, repeating riff. The CD also contains the full contents of the earlier Wound EP, which is similar in style, although a notch below
Unwilling to Explain in terms of songwriting and production.
