Following
Tom Harrell's departure from the Contemporary label, a CD of leftover unreleased material from sessions with five different groups was compiled. That doesn't mean that this material is at all substandard.
Harrell's spirited "April Mist" with pianist
James Williams and tenor saxophonist
Joe Lovano, his eerie "Suspended View" with
Bob Berg on soprano sax, and the mysterious "Autumn Picture" with
Lovano on soprano merited release with the rest of the sessions. There are also three tracks from
Harrell's underheard quintet co-led by alto saxophonist
George Robert, which is much like the outstanding quintet that
Harrell was a part of at that time, led by
Phil Woods. Worth acquiring. ~ Ken Dryden
