PJ Harvey's music translates pretty well to violin, viola, and cello on this, her very own entry in Vitamin's long-running
String Quartet Tribute series. Opener "50 Foot Queenie" gets the tautness of the original right, while a slithering "Down by the Water" benefits from subtle percussion touches. The violin does an uncanny impersonation of
Harvey's wailing vocal on "C'Mon Billy" and "O Stella," and "To Bring You My Love" and "Wind" are tense and dramatic. It's one of the series' stronger entries, since it ably blends tribute with interpretation. Definitely of interest to
PJ Harvey devotees. ~ Johnny Loftus
