John Klemmer was (along with
Eddie Harris) a pioneer and an innovator at utilizing electrical devices on his saxophone. For this live set,
Klemmer used an Echoplex on his tenor and soprano and was joined by keyboardist
Mike Nock, electric bassist Wilton Feldman, drummer
Eddie Marshall,
Victor Feldman on percussion, and (on two of the eight songs) vocalist
Diana Lee. Recorded live on June 17, 1972 (with additional recording added five days later), this CD reissue gives one a good example of
Klemmer's playing before his mood music records caught on. He certainly achieved some unusual effects at the time although he never became an influential force. Worth investigating by open-eared listeners. ~ Scott Yanow
