Quelques mois avant de souffler ses 70 bougies, le Boss sort un album en total décalage avec ses propres clichés. Un disque qui ne ressemble à rien de ce qu’il avait enregistré jusqu’ici. Bye bye le E Street Band, son efficace groupe d’armoires à glace qui fait se lever des stades entiers, et hello cordes, cuivres et chœurs ! Avec Western Stars, Bruce Springsteen se transforme surtout en Glen Campbell du troisième millénaire. On pense souvent au chanteur disparu en 2017 qui tendit le pont le plus solide entre pop, country et soul, voix aussi iconique que celle de Sinatra et Elvis, brillant sur les tubesques Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Galveston et autre Rhinestone Cowboy…

Comme son défunt aîné, Springsteen se détache volontairement du temps présent et joue davantage la carte intemporelle de l’innocence et de la nonchalance plutôt que celle de la résistance et de la défiance. A cette ambiance parfois aux frontières du kitsch, qui fleure bon la Californie fin 60's/début 70's (le Boss a dû se passer en boucle Jimmy Webb, Harry Nilsson et Burt Bacharach), s’ajoute une atmosphère cinématographique due à la production de soie et de velours de Ron Aniello, déjà à l’œuvre sur Wrecking Ball (2012) et High Hopes (2014). Rien donc de purement rock’n’roll dans ce luxueux album à prendre dans son intégralité. Drapé dans la mélancolie, Western Stars s’appréhende comme un roman ou un film, non comme une simple compilation de 13 titres.
