While the first three songs of this rather brief (nine-track) album offer more of the average white soul with which
Hobex made their name, the rest of it is a much quieter, acoustic-oriented session. Either way,
Hobex and principal singer/songwriter
Greg Humphreys are no great find, but those acoustic-flavored cuts do at least yield a different dimension to what would otherwise be a pedestrian blue-eyed soul group. They're tender, confessional rootsy songs, with overtones of country and gospel; "That's Where It's At" is a
Sam Cooke/J.W. Alexander composition, the kind of thing that
Ted Hawkins used to play so often. Due to its short (29-minute) length and the inclusion of an instrumental, "Round Steak Rag," this has the feel of a side-project throwaway, inoffensive though it is. ~ Richie Unterberger
