Elvis. Hank Sr. Webb Pierce. Lefty Frizzell. Retro to most, but that’s the music Brock Gonyea was raised on. To hear his reedy voice throw into its upper reaches feels like a ghost, but consuming the 25-year-old’s debut project WHERE MY HEART IS – featuring Musicians Hall of Famers, ACM and Emmy Award winners – is to melt into something rapturously contemporary. From the Adirondacks region in upstate New York, with a logging business family who played music to entertain themselves, Gonyea’s life has been cloistered to much “pop” culture. But the result is something as startling as the appearance of Dwight Yoakam, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, BR549 or The Mavericks all those years ago.
