BURNS is a Los Angeles-based producer and DJ who straddles the indie and dance worlds, creating high-energy original tracks as well as remixes and productions for artists including
Britney Spears,
Rihanna,
Liam Payne,
French Montana,
Louis Tomlinson, and
Little Mix.
Born Matthew James Burns in Stafford, England in 1985, he hit the music scene during the late 2000s, with singles as well as remixes for
Calvin Harris,
Gossip,
Yuksek, and others. His passionate nu-disco single "Y.S.L.M. (You Stopped Loving Me)," a collaboration with
Fred Falke, was released in 2010 and became a club hit.
BURNS' double-mix set This Is Burns, Vol. 1 was issued by Music Response that year, and in 2011, he produced another club smash, "Lies." (Several remixes of the track were released, with
Otto Knows' mix making the biggest impact.) More singles appeared, in addition to remixes for artists including
Charli XCX and
Iggy Azalea, as well as production for hits by
Ellie Goulding ("Midas Touch") and
Pitbull ("All the Things").
BURNS moved to Los Angeles in 2014, and the summery, multi-cultural atmosphere of the city made an impact on his work. Following singles for Doorn and
Spinnin' Records, as well as producing
Britney Spears' Top 20 hit "Make Me...," he signed to RCA Records and in 2017 released the single "Far Gone." A handful of
BURNS singles arrived the following year, including "Angel," "Worst," and "Hands on Me"; the latter featured
Maluma and
Rae Sremmurd, and was the first English-language feature for
Maluma. In 2019, he released the single "Energy," featuring
A$AP Rocky and
Sabrina Claudio. ~ Paul Simpson
