b. Gregory Colin Bailey, Antigua, West Indies. Bailey came from a musical family and inspired by the music of Jamaica recorded his debut, the uplifting ‘African Girl’, in combination with the UK-based DJ Spider Don. While the song proved a hit in and around the Caribbean it was largely ignored in Jamaica. Although he was unable to break into the Jamaican chart he released a series of ‘small island’ hits including, ‘Crossroads’, ‘Different World’, ‘All About Love’ and ‘All Night Long’. His Caribbean success led to interest in the USA, especially in California where he recorded a version of the Alton Ellis hit, ‘Breaking Up’, alongside Freddie McGregor’s protégés Worl-A-Girl. The song was acclaimed, as the reggae summer anthem of 1995 in California and the follow-up, ‘Tell Me’ proved equally popular. The releases led to an appearance at Reggae Sumfest in 1995 supporting artists such as Buju Banton, Michael Rose and Mikey Spice. In the same year he also performed alongside Professor Nuts, Lieutenant Stitchie and Merciless on the Tribute To Garnett Silk Tour. Bailey subsequently embarked on a recording project with Hopeton Lindo and Syl Gordon, who initially produced his Jamaican debut, ‘Intimidation’ in 1997 on the 321 Strong label. The song proved especially popular in Europe and the following year he released his debut, Time Will Tell. In 1999, he performed in his homeland where his Total Togetherness tour earned him the title as Antigua’s Reggae Ambassador. He continued touring and justifiably earned critical acclaim for his showcase at New York’s Music Festival and the Guinness Reggae Carifest Tour. © TiVo
