The official debut of UK based artist & producer Culan is shaping up to be a climactic moment in modern-day dancehall and reggae. Born and raised in West London and hailing from a Jamaican and English family, Caribbean culture has been deeply-rooted within Culan in many ways beginning with growing up on 90s Dancehall. Culan’s first step into the music realm was through his uncle who had already built a fierce reputation in the prolific UK sound system scene. After years of growing up under his guidance and following him to sound clashes in London while fully absorbing the genre, Culan was embraced by the well-established London based reggae label Jet Star at the age of 16 as an in-house producer and engineer. This was the pivotal moment where he found his true calling and decided there was no turning back. While at Jet Star, Culan began to produce & remix songs for reggae legends such as Beenie Man, Beres Hammond and more working on available acapellas for compilation releases on the label. Fast forward to now, he has evolved into a respected musician working with top urban producers such as The Fanatix (Popcaan, Giggs, Stylo G), Sons of Sonix (Ty Dolla Sign, Trey Songz, Stormzy) and Josh Thompson (Mullally, Rita Ora) among others. Since the start of his career, Culan has graced the Rampage stage at Notting Hill Carnival and various clubs around London. 2017 proved to be a monumental year as the release of his original dancehall rewrite of Ed Sheeran’s international hit “Shape of You” quickly went viral, amassing 7 million views within 4 weeks. This resulted in organic UK radio support from powerhouse stations Kiss FM, Capital Xtra and BBC 1Xtra. His debut track ‘Easy to Love You’ was championed by renowned reggae tastemaker; David Rodigan on BBC 1Xtra and as well online press; MTV, Earmilk and Link Up TV. Culan recently featured alongside UK rap star; Wretch 32 and Dancehall’s leading jamaican star; Masicka to release dancehall anthem ‘Affi Me’ which has been a tastemaker favourite ever since.
