Dave Maclean

Dave MacLean is the pseudonym of Brazilian singer-songwriter José Carlos González (born on September 29, 1944), who became famous after his hit single “Me and You” became the theme song for the soap opera Os Ossos do Barão. Hailing from the industrial ABC region in the Greater São Paulo, González showed an interest in music from a very early age and formed the band The Buttons in 1969. Composed of González on vocals and guitar, João Alberto on bass, Marinho Testoni on keyboards, and Marinho Thomaz on drums, the band decided to change their name to Dave MacLean after the success of their 1974 single “We Said Goodbye.” The song quickly blew up and obtained gold certifications both in their native Brazil and in Mexico. Shortly after, the band split up and González embarked on a solo career while the remaining members formed Casa das Máquinas. During the 80s, González formed the trio Dollar Company with the Munhoz brothers, releasing two albums of Beatles covers reimagined as country numbers in 1981. Following Dollar Company’s dissolution in the mid 90s, González formed Montana Country, a covers band that reversioned country classics as well as part of the Fab Four’s repertoire. In subsequent years, the singer spent most of his time touring with O Som Internacional dos Anos 70, a live show featuring songs by The Bee Gees, Elton John, and Johnny Rivers. © ©Copyright Music Story Evelyn Duskey 2020
