Dhani Harrison started his musical career relatively late, switching from the automotive industry to performing following the death of his father,
George Harrison, in November 2001. Initially,
Dhani served as the custodian of his dad's legacy, assisting family friend
Jeff Lynne in the completion of
George's posthumous 2002 album,
Brainwashed, but he quickly formed
thenewno2 with Oliver Hecks.
Harrison continued to tour and record with
thenewno2 into the 2010s, easing his way into scoring film and television. He finally released
IN///PARALLEL, his first solo album, in 2017.
Born on August 1, 1978,
Dhani Harrison is the only son of
Beatle George Harrison and Olivia Harrison. The couple raised
Dhani at
George's estate of Friar Park in Henley-on-Thames, where he grew up surrounded by music and cars. Upon completing his secondary education,
Harrison enrolled at Brown University in the United States, studying industrial design. After earning a bachelor's degree,
Harrison gained employment at McLaren Automotive as a designer.
Harrison left McLaren after his dad's death in 2001. Completing
Brainwashed --
George's first collection of new material in 15 years -- was
Dhani's first major musical project. Its November 2002 release was accompanied by
Concert for George, a tribute to the former
Beatle that featured his two surviving bandmates,
Paul McCartney and
Ringo Starr, as well as
Eric Clapton,
Jeff Lynne,
Billy Preston,
Tom Petty,
Ravi Shankar, and
Dhani, who played acoustic guitar throughout the show.
In 2006, he formed
thenewno2 with Oliver Hecks,
Nick Fyffe, and
Paul Hicks.
You Are Here, the band's full-length debut, arrived in 2008 and they worked steadily over the next few years, releasing
thefearofmissingout in 2012. During this time,
Harrison also worked as a film composer, collaborating with
Paul Hicks on the 2013 film
Beautiful Creatures, which was followed by 2014's Learning to Drive. The pair also created scores for the television series Good Girls Revolt and Outsiders.
