DJ Abstract

A founding member of the Phunckateck crew, who pioneered the now-thriving San Francisco Drum ’n’ Bass scene, DJ Abstract is tearing up dance floors nationwide with his innovative, hard-hitting sound. As both a producer and a DJ, he's been able to carve out his own style. Like most of the Phunckateck crew, Abstract’s original tracks don’t easily fit into any narrowly defined subgenres of Drum ’n’ Bass. The squirming synth lines wind themselves around dizzying breakbeats, which feature unorthodox kickdrum hits, subterranean bass, and subtle rhythmic shifts that make for intelligent listening while still making you shake your booty. Drones, spooky effects, and the occasional ambient texture fill the background; clever vocal samples set up dramatic transitions. The overall effect is dark and funky, intelligent and danceable, thus bridging the crucial gaps in current Drum ’n’ Bass music. Like his crewmates UFO, Noel, Juju, and Sage, Abstract is taking the music to the next level.
