Douglas Boyd is a Scottish conductor and oboist. He was a student of Janet Craxton at the Royal Academy of Music, and he later studied with
Maurice Bourgue.
Boyd was a founding member of the
Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and he was the principal oboist from 1981 to 2002. He became interested in conducting, and was guided by
Claudio Abbado,
Nikolaus Harnoncourt,
Paavo Berglund, and
Colin Davis.
Boyd's first position as a conductor came in 2001 when he began work with the
Manchester Camerata. He was also principal guest conductor with the
City of London Sinfonia and artistic director of the Garsington Opera. He was appointed principal conductor of the
Musikkollegium Winterthur in 2008, and served in that capacity until 2016. He also became the music director of the
Orchestre de Chambre de Paris in 2015.
Boyd has recorded extensively with MDG, Avie, RCA, Deutsche Grammophon, and other labels.
