Elliott Wheeler is a producer and composer who specializes in film and television soundtracks but has also released albums on his own, beginning with 2013's The Long Time. His best-known work has involved scores for
Baz Luhrmann, including The Great Gatsby and
The Get Down.
Wheeler earned his degrees in composition and brass at Sydney, Australia's Conservatorium of Music, after which he founded Turning Studios. His first score was for the 2008 film Restraint, but his big break arrived in 2013 with his score and accompanying music for
Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. That same year brought The Long Time, a full-length album featuring appearances by
Loene Carmen, Caitlin Park, and
Melodie Nelson. By the time he did the music for
Luhrmann's 2016 Netflix series
The Get Down, he had relocated to New York. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
