Enrique Heredia "Negri" was born in Madrid in 1972 to a renowned flamenco family, which includes singer
Estrella Morente and guitarist
Sabicas, among others.
Heredia became famous as the singer of seminal new flamenco act
La Barbería del Sur, which he formed with guitarist
Juan José Suárez.
La Barbería del Sur released eight albums between 1991 and 2002, largely composed, produced, and arranged by
Negri, all remarkable for their fusion of flamenco with jazz, pop, or funk.
Heredia began a solo career in the mid-2000s, which saw him paying tribute to Mexican bolero composers
Agustín Lara (El Último Beso, 2005) and
Armando Manzanero (Mano a Mano, 2012), and Cuban music (Habanera Flamenca, 2010). Throughout his career, the restless
Heredia has collaborated with flamenco luminaries such as
Paco de Lucía,
Tomatito,
Raimundo Amador,
Vicente Amigo, and
Enrique Morente; pop bands such as
Presuntos Implicados and
Mecano; and even legendary jazz drummer
Max Roach. ~ Mariano Prunes
