Born Félix Danilo Gómez, the Panamanian reggaetón singer Flex (known as Nigga in Latin America, Gómez changed his stage name for release in the U.S.) has set himself apart for his sensitive take on the predominately misogynistic genre. Flex rose to notoriety with his 2000 duet with Duende, “Déjala,” and garnered accolades in Panama after recording “La Balada de Flex”--an homage to his deceased mother--for Mother’s Day. His platinum-selling 2007 debut, TE QUIERO, spawned a hit single of the same name while the follow-up furthered Flex’s reputation as a romantic storyteller. Often criticized for his inability to stay in tune, Flex nonetheless remains one of reggaetón’s most distinctive artists.
