Copenhagen-based duo GENTS are the latest exciting sound to come from the capital’s burgeoning electronica scene, with their debut LP ‘About Time’ set for release on the 7 th April on The Big Oil Recording Company. With Theis Vesterløkke on synths and production and Niels Fejrskov Juhl’s characteristic baritone vocals, GENTS’ sound is founded in a shared passion for 80’s synths and drum machines, alongside obvious nods to distinguished crooner’s Elvis, Scott Walker and Rick Astley. Their sound screams fun, but the duo are keen to emphasise their sincerity in what they do; talking to Soundvenue, Juhl describes their ambition to write songs which move people, but always with “a twinkle in the eye”. Citing artists such as Wham!, Tears for Fears and The War on Drugs as influences, the pair champion musicians who are not afraid to open up their hearts and use music as a direct mode of expression, with no distance or irony. It should come as no surprise then that GENTS’ debut album is a detailed, focused and meaningful pop production. Featuring panflute solos, Spanish guitars, high-flying synthesizers and house beats, the duo’s sound is expansive and quirky. But for an album whose lyrics deal with themes of alienation, powerlessness, love and the longing for meaning, GENTS manage to strike a refreshingly upbeat and playful tone. A notable highlight is the featuring vocals of Emma Acs on the track ‘Cold Eyes’, which feel like the perfect complement to Juhl’s baritone in a sweet vocal duet laid over bright, sweeping synths. Speaking of their chemistry, Juhl remarks that when Acs came to the studio, “she – like us – had Kylie Minogue’s ‘Fever’ in mind as a reference to ‘Cold Eyes’, so it felt this duet was meant to be.” Having already featured on Noisey, The 405 and Camels and Lions, the pair have gigs booked in March at The Waiting Room, London, Amsterdam’s s105 De School for Subbacultcha and Berlin’s Loophole for Shameless/Limitless on the 8 th , 9 th and 11th respectively. GENTS’ debut album ‘About Time’ is due for release 7 th March, spearheaded by singles ‘Cold Eyes’ and ‘Brother’.
