As
Ghost Power, Tim Gane and
Jeremy Novak's playful instrumentals build on their legacy of experimental electronic pop. Gane's work with
Stereolab,
Cavern of Anti-Matter, and Turn On and
Novak's time with Dymaxion can be heard in the way the duo's lively tracks -- like their 2020 debut single, "Asteroid Witch"/"Inchwork" -- borrow from exotica, motorik, library music, and post-punk in mysterious and mischievous ways. That single and the group's 2022 full-length
Ghost Power were released by
Stereolab's legendary label Duophonic Super 45s, the perfect haven for this kind of idiosyncratic electronic music.
Gane and
Novak's friendship stretches back to the 1990s, when Duophonic Super 45s issued Dymaxion releases including 1998's EP Sound Recording and the 2002 compilation Dymaxion x 4 + 3 = 38:33. Though the latter was Dymaxion's final release,
Novak and Gane continued to work on music together over the years. The pair recorded in New York and Berlin both remotely and together, and
Ghost Power's debut single, "Asteroid Witch"/"Inchwork," appeared in December 2020 as a limited-edition 7" on Duophonic Super 45s (which, aside from a few other singles and
Stereolab reissues, had been largely inactive for nearly two decades). April 2022 saw the release of the full-length
Ghost Power, which expanded the duo's repertoire to whimsical miniatures as well as sprawling suites. ~ Heather Phares
